Velvet bean contains various anti-nutritional factors, such as protease inhibitors, total phenolics, oligosaccharides (raffinose, stachyose, verbascose), and some cyclitols with anti-diabetic effects. It has been shown that its seeds are potentially of substantial medicinal importance. Velvet bean contains levodopa as well as two components of the mitochondrial electron transport chain; coenzyme Q10 and nicotine adenine dinucleotide (NADH). Nowadays, velvet bean or Mucuna is widely studied because L-dopa is a substance used as a first-line treatment for Parkinson's disease. Beside that velvet bean also has anti venom, anti-microbial, neuroprotective, anti-diabetics, and antioxidant.
